IdoThankU is now in school! Gratitude in children: It’s never too early to start!
Most parents teach their kids the importance of saying thank you by the time they get to school, if not sooner. But how many have truly instructed them in the art of being grateful? It’s a tricky situation — feeling grateful is an essential component for one’s wellbeing, but in the daily hustle and bustle of our lives, we often forget to be grateful for what we have. When most adults seemingly forget to count their blessings, how can we teach kids about gratitude? It’s simple, we need to model an ‘attitude of gratitude’ right from the start. And that’s exactly what we at ThankU did!
What we did
The ThankU team visited the prestigious Garden Nursery and Pre-primary School based in Mumbai which plays host to over 250 children. Nurturing the minds of our country’s future, we decided it is best to sow the seeds whilst they are young. A small interaction with children involved teaching them about the importance of gratitude while also discussing scenarios where they should be grateful. An action oriented approach in the form of specially designed ThankU cards along with an activity sheet was then provided to them.
The benefit of an activity sheet where a child notes down who they gave the ThankU card to along with the reason involves parental interaction. While such young kids aren’t adept at writing themselves, the activity engages with parents and children simultaneously. In a chain reaction, parents too, then take on a central role guiding and teaching the child more about gratitude.
In fact, in a special session, the teachers too were sensitised about the importance of fostering gratitude. In this highly competitive setting where rigorous academic modules take the forefront, the culture of inculcating human values is often lost. Teachers play an important role in shaping these young minds by creating an atmosphere of positive thoughts and gratitude. It is with this that they transition from just being teachers to value imbibing gurus.
The impact we are looking to create
More than ever, it feels important to help children develop tools that will allow them to grow into conscious, healthy adults. One of the most important skills for lifelong emotional well-being? Gratitude.
At ThankU, we believe, just as you teach kids to read and write, you can also educate them in gratitude. And it’s never too early to start. Both expressing — and feeling — gratitude are important parts of life. Learning gratefulness is an evolving, sometimes complicated process for children. As with all developmental traits, the age at which a sense of gratitude appears varies from child to child.
As adults, we play an important role in the life of a child. We provide the blueprint for what to say and what to do and in what contexts. It’s much easier, more meaningful to teach kids things we model ourselves. Our children want to be like us. Expressing gratitude through words, writing, and small acts of reciprocity are all ways to teach children how to become grateful.
With the ThankU card, we provide the children with a tangible token of reciprocation. Writing a note of thanks for someone’s help is a wonderful way for children to reflect on the reasons they’re grateful to that person and how they have helped them.
We’ve taken the first step to bring about this positive change. Are you ready to join us?
